Introduction

The following photo of the early stages of the invasion shows a column of tanks rolling through the town of Liberec. As you can see from the image, the invasion and occupation of Czechoslovakia, though fiercely resisted in some areas, did not lead to a wide, popular uprising against the occupying troops. In many parts of the country, despite the humiliation of occupation and the inconveniences of martial law, everyday life continued.
