Module 05: 1968 — A Generation in Revolt?

Evidence 19: Photograph of Czech Students Protesting the Invasion

(click to print)

Introduction

In the photograph below, students march through the streets of Prague holding a blood-stained flag to protest the occupation. While the invasion and occupation put an end to the liberalization project begun in the spring by the Czechoslovak Communist Party, students, even after the invasion, protested in favor of a resumption of the process begun by Dubçek and brought to an abrupt end in August 1968.

Question to Consider

  • How does this photo of student protests in Prague compare with photographs of protests in Chicago or Paris?
